Our Sustainability Commitment
Our Sustainability Commitment

Onsite Energy Production. At our Chico, CA, facility we have invested proactively in energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Our facility employs two Photo Voltaic (Solar Energy) systems, totaling 450 kilowatts. We also capture waste heat to assist in the pasteurization process. Our renewable power generation, combined with our other on-site power sources, lets us generate more than 25% of the energy we use from renewable resources.

Renewable Energy

Everyone associated with the Santa Cruz Organic® brand -- from manufacturer to growers in the field --  is dedicated to making environmentally sound choices. Sustainability at Santa Cruz Organic® means sustaining our premium quality by supporting sustainable resources -- from the farms and suppliers we work with to our on-site solar energy generation. In addition to our onsite renewable energy generation, we purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in the form of wind RECs. Our wind REC purchase combined with our on-site solar energy generation offsets 100% of the energy used to produce our products. All Santa Cruz Organic®brand products are certified USDA Organic.

How do we buy renewable energy?

Renewable Energy Certificates (sometimes called RECs, green tags or green certificates) allow customers anywhere in the U.S. to support the generation of renewable energy by purchasing the renewable attributes of a specific quantity of renewable energy. This ensures that more renewable energy is added to the electricity grid, displacing conventional fuels, such as coal, nuclear or gas from the electricity system. Green-e® program in which we participate certifies that the Renewable Energy Certificates we purchase meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. We go to great lengths to minimize waste associated with making our products, diverting more than 95% of our waste from landfill and buying enough renewable energy each year to cover our production needs.

Waste reduction

We’re fully committed to being sustainable, acting responsibly and working to keep our planet remarkable. And we’re proud to share the news that the U.S. Zero Waste Business Council has recognized our efforts. The council awarded our Chico, California manufacturing facility with their platinum level Zero Waste certification-the highest level offered. It means a plant that manufactures Santa Cruz Organic® products is successfully diverting 99 percent of waste from landfills, incineration and the environment.
